Picture
A man who was found guilty for robbery was put in jail. He was assigned to assist to a trial and explain to the judge why he wasn’t guilty for committing that crime. One he gets the chance to gives reasons the judge don’t believes him. Again the man tries to explain and the reasons were well supported but the judge continues not believing him. In the argument The judge considers him guilty and tells security to take him in.

The truth behind it:

I can say things like this happen in real life. Many people sometime in their life may have got in trouble but they were not guilty to the problem they got into. I can say this because maybe they were at the wrong place and at the wrong time. This guy, as found guilty by the judge, was not guilty for what he was being punished for but because of his looks and the way he spoke the judge took a decision without even evaluating what this man had to say. These situations are constantly occurring in the courts and there’s nothing to be done to make a change. It is a problematic that we should really consider to manage. There is a need to stop stereotyping people because how it looks or dresses because it is not about the physical appearance but is about the essence of the person indeed. This has to be changed because we are targeting people just because of their looks. It also is important to change this fact because many innocent people are in jail today. Do you think it is right to keep putting innocent people in jail? What about the guilty ones?

Introduction

I have selected four editorials which I really liked and I found interesting. I also provide a summary, an opinion and favorite parts for the first two and for the last two have just listed them as assigned.

 # 1 ¡Bailemos!

Picture
In the editorial Bailemos! written by Mario Alegre Barrios, the author uses a reflective voice to express his concerns on certain alarming situations that are occurring in Puerto Rico. He worries about his negative behavior towards those situations and how this behavior can’t change or stop things from occurring. Later in the text, he decides to change his negative perspective toward Puerto Rico and invites us the readers to do the same thing. He chooses to seek for a positive perspective and thinks he could find looking on Puerto Rico’s future. In other words, he wants people to change their negative perspectives and star to believe that there is hope for Puerto Rico. One quote that demonstrates he’s way of thinking is when he says that “no hay mejor manera de comenzar la semana que dejándose llevar por ese frenesí colectivo tan característico nuestro, cuando nada nos parece imposible, cuando sabemos más allá de toda duda que muy pronto… volveremos a ser un país en todo el sentido de la palabra”. What this quote means is that it might be difficult to have a positive perspective on Puerto Rico because doubt can stand in our way and we might don’t think that there is a possible change. One thing that really stands out is that the author persists and convinces us to don’t let doubt take over the lively passion that identifies us as puertoricans. In a way the author puts a very passionate effort on writing this editorial. We see that it is written in a formal way and with a convincing style. He can convince you and change your perspective only by reading this editorial. He is very clear with his ideas and does a great job on supporting them. Only by looking at the title we can get so motivated and interested in the message that this editorial carries. Although, it also makes you question what the purpose of the author is when he come up with this title. Finally, if we take a look on content we can deduce that what this author wrote has a deep cultural meaning on Puerto Rico’s current situations.

Favorite parts:
  • "siempre hay razones para la esperanza"

  • "apostar por la alegría, para esperar el futuro con impaciencia".

  • "un arrepentido recién salido de las tinieblas del pesimismo, del pesar, de la duda".

# 2 A Novel Scorned

Imagen
In the editorial A Novel Scorned, the author Claire Needell, writes about how she as a young adolescent in middle school read continuously Margaret Mitchell’s epic romance, “Gone with the Wind.” Explains how she read it several times and how her family and other people considered it deranged. Also mentions how she was very driven to the fact that the book presented a distorted view of womanhood and its portrayal of romantic love. “Gone with the Wind” was like her “Twilight” series. Although, mentions that one she enters high school she puts aside the novel and discover other books, Claire Needell compares herself with Scarlett and her romantic thinking. Later on she forgets about the novel but again remembers it when speaking with a friend about their daughters and their fascination with romances.  Then she realizes that right now in this point of her life that she is getting a divorce and going to be a single woman has stepped out of such romantic paradigm. She stills believes that she has a Scarlett-ish sensibility on the perils of love and demonstrates it with a quote “It is a thousand-and-some-page proof of the human need to seek love”. Regardless to her experiences and how she compares herself with the main character she feels that she is too experienced and humble to scorn. I liked the fact that the author wrote this editorial in a comparative and narrative style because it is easy to grasp and to follow. I think the author was very passionate when writing this editorial because in it she freely expresses her adolescent experience on reading and how it influenced her love life. The thing that made this editorial so interesting to me was how it was written from the beginning with simple language use as if a teenage had written it.

Favorite parts:

  • “Gone with the Wind” made me feel that a part of myself might be like Scarlett, that I, too, might be capable of caring about the wrong things in life, so long as I was loved by a man".

  • "And so I forgot about “Gone With the Wind.” Until recently, when I was talking with a friend about our daughters (now in middle school themselves), and their fascination with impossibly lengthy, endlessly repetitive supernatural romances".

  • "I can’t help but be reminded of the one part in “Gone With the Wind” that I routinely used to skim: the postwar section, in which Scarlett is married to the pathetic Frank, whom she stole from her own sister".

#4 A la violación de derechos, nunca más

Parents buy Disney movies to their kids to entertain them but don’t know the hidden message behind them. Children may be for hours watching a film while parents are working on house duties. In the mean time, these kids learn the ideas that Disney movies portrays. After watching the documentary about Disney I was very impressed to the critics that many researches made about Disney hidden messages. If it wasn’t for this documentary I wouldn’t be able to know the truth behind Disney World.  I used to believe that Disney movies were made for children as to teach them positive messages but then this documentary concern me about the negative ideas that children are receiving. I could not believe that such ideas as race and gender expectations were behind this movies. This really made a click to me when in the documentary they examine the movie Beauty and the Beast. They discussed how girls are expected to be when they are being treated aggressively by a man. For example, in the part where the beast goes to the room and asks belle to have dinner with him and she refuses, we see how aggressive he gets. Although, belle is concern about he’s aggressiveness, she persists on trying to find his tender side. I see this as if teaching girls to accept patterns of violence from a man because deeply inside he’s not what he is indicating and showing to be like.  This documentary talks about many Disney movies that have hidden messages like the one just mentioned where it is valued the high presence of different roles and expectations of woman and men. If parents get informed about the serious meaning that this movies have on children’s learning they would not buy them anymore. Although, if you ask me I say that we are constantly being influenced by any kind of media from our childhood and as we grow and that is something we can’t change but to be concern later on in life.

Thoughtful thinking

Picture
In the list of the personal items I have mentioned things that happen on a daily basis that really pisses me off. Those things can get me so stressed that I might kill someone for it. On the contrary there is the list of the social items and those are things that have to do with culture and values. In this list I won’t kill anybody but I might get mad and also stressed for it. I say this because I respect people’s believes and lifestyles. A common thread on these social things is society’s expectations on race, gender, religion, sex, etc. For example, certain things that have a lot of value in Puerto Rico are religion and politics. These two aspects have a strong presence on anything we do and also they are things we are always arguing about. I don’t see it as something wrong because on any place in the World these are aspects that are always discussed but I think we exaggerate sometimes and we take it too personal. Therefore, there are three main things that are closest to me and these are: religion, injustice and no appreciation for someone. In the case of religion, I can say that I believe in God but I don’t like that religion sometimes puts limits on me and that really pisses me off. Another aspect is injustice, I hate when people are not fair with  other people or situations. I can’t tolerate injustice it really makes me mad and so emotional that sometimes I would cry because of it. At last, no appreciation for someone I consider it rude and I won’t let it happen. I can get so frustrated about it that I can take revenge on it. I believe that both of my lists have a significant thing that really pisses me off.

El trotamundos

Dislike

I really hate this song because I heard it a lot in the school activities of my little sisters. It is so annoying because all the years they have trotamundos come and sing this song to the students. The thing is that I paid to assist to the activity so I have to listen to them even though if I don’t want to. It is not a bad song because is for children but I guess since I listen to it a lot It made me hate it.

Hannah Montana

Lyrics

Like

The climb is a song she sang in the movie Hannah Montana. I really like her song. This song reminds me when she was working at Disney Channel. I love all her TV shows because they were so funny. When she sings this song I can see the progress the she had made through her artist life. This song reminds me how strong I am and that I should not give up in life. I have to just keep trying and don’t let the negatives things stand in my way. I like the fact that she predicts a better image of herself in her TV shows while capturing children and teen’s attention.

Looking at my stream of consciousness the column that has more words is the loving one. It is a surprise because honestly I’m stressed through the whole day and is not just when I arrive home that I feel relaxed. I don’t know if it’s me but I find it very hard to accomplish with many things throughout the day. Although, I also considered myself a happy and friendly person and I’m very respectful with everyone. I consider that I really love to study and that is the reason I’m still studying. I believe that God always comes first and then my family. I really love to spend time with the family and share many experiences with my friends. I enjoyed doing this activity because it helped me to know what my likes or dislikes are. I hope I can use this activity as a strategy in my teaching.

Meatballs 2’ is colorful, if reheated

This review was short but complete. I liked the fact that was not that long as the others reviews. If in this review the author had include a short analysis in terms of the aspects that were relevant in the movie it would make it better. I enjoyed reading this review and I would like to see the movie.

The Conjuring

This review is very complete. I liked the fact that it discussess all the elements in the movie. It is very descriptive and detailed. Although it is kind of long but the information in it really got me interested in seeing it.

Opinion

This activity helped me a lot when having to be a movie critic because this reviews were like models for me to follow. When I wrote my reviews I had in mind the way this authors wrotte their reviews. It really helped me to focus on the main important points in a movie and to include all the elements that should be integrated so the reader has a better idea before seeing the movie. This activity was fun and educative at the same time.

opinion
I can’t tell you more than this brief description because I can spoil it for you but I wish that you all have the chance to see this movie. For me it was very astonishing especially because I have two young sisters and it really affected the way I look after them. After I saw this movie I was very protective with my sisters and would not leave them alone not only for a minute. This movie taught me that when being in charge of children we should be very responsible and attentive. The lesson learned here is to have malice of things but not to the point of exaggerating but be aware of the danger in the streets. I think that we should no restrain our kids from participating of activities and sharing with friends but we should be careful and alert of anything that could put them in danger or harm them.

Opinion
I didn't like the Smurfs 2 because it’s like the first one. When I saw this movie I was just waiting for it to be over. Although, my young sisters enjoyed it nothing that happened in the movie was a surprise to me. I thought it was going to be completely different from the first one but it was very alike so it was not that fun. If you ask me if I could see this movie again I would say no.

Picture
The sun rises and I feel the heat. My lips were very dry and salty and I almost felt if I was going to dehydrate. This was a moment were you can realize that some kind of force let you live. I was pushed by something so hard and couldn't control my body movements, just pass through the experience. All I could do at that moment was to ask myself, am I going to live or this is it?  Then, I closed my eyes and told myself “this is it”. How did this happen to me? Why would life be done for me this way? Suddenly, I remember the advice my aunt gave to me that day in the morning before arriving to this place but I didn't pay attention to her words. I was in a hurry to get early to the place and was to busy to listen to her. After everything ended I learned the lesson. I almost lost my life but now I know how important is to listen to someone who really loves you and cares about you. I told my aunt the experience I went through and she said “I’m glad that you are OK and that you learned that when I alarm you about something is because I know it is dangerous”. These words were so strong to me that now when I go out with my friends I always stop and listen to what she has to say.
